How Long Should You Give A Brain Supplement Before Giving Up?
The most common reason people conclude a supplement "did nothing" is that they stopped before anything could have happened. The second most common is that they kept going past the point where their money was recoverable. Both are solved by picking the trial length deliberately.
Match the trial to the mechanism, not to your patience
Different mechanisms have different timescales, and reading the timescale off the mechanism is more reliable than reading it off the bottle.
| Mechanism | Realistic onset | Fair trial length |
|---|---|---|
| Stimulant (caffeine, etc.) | 30–60 minutes | One dose |
| Correcting a deficiency (B12, iron, D) | 2–8 weeks | 8–12 weeks with bloodwork |
| Serotonergic botanicals (saffron) | 4–8 weeks | 12–16 weeks |
| Sleep quality changes | 1–3 weeks | 4–6 weeks |
| Metabolic and vascular (blood sugar, blood pressure) | 3–6 months | Longer than any refund window |
Memo Volt sits in rows three and five. The Saffron Extract route could show something at four to eight weeks; the blood-sugar group operates on a timescale nobody runs a personal trial over. The full breakdown is on our mechanism page.
The refund window sets the ceiling
Sixty days from purchase is the practical maximum for any supplement trial where you want your money back, and it is shorter than it sounds. Subtract shipping. Subtract the week the bottle sat on the counter. Subtract the five days you need at the end to actually process a refund. What you have left is roughly six or seven weeks of real trial, which happens to be just enough for a serotonergic mechanism and nowhere near enough for a metabolic one.
Do this on day one. Put the refund deadline in your calendar the moment the order confirms, set a reminder five days before it, and start the bottle the day it arrives. That one habit prevents the single most common complaint in this entire product category.
Measure something other than your impression
Self-assessed memory is close to worthless as an instrument, because the thing being measured is also the thing doing the measuring, and expectation contaminates both. Replace it with three concrete, checkable complaints written down and dated before your first capsule. "I lose names at work." "I re-read emails twice." "I forget why I walked into the kitchen." At day fifty-five, read the note rather than consulting your feelings.
Better still, ask one other person. A partner or colleague noticing an unprompted change is worth more than any amount of introspection, because they have no expectation to confirm.
Change one thing at a time
If you start a supplement, a walking habit and an earlier bedtime in the same week, and something improves, you have learned nothing about the supplement and quite a lot about your own enthusiasm. Start the supplement alone. Hold everything steady for eight weeks. Then add the walk, which will probably do more anyway.
